Freshwater for the Future

Conference 2006
Lac Leamy Hilton
Gatineau, Quebec
May 8-10, 2006

Background

The The Government of Canada's Policy Research Initiative (PRI) will host a large conference on water policy at the Lac Leamy Hilton in Gatineau, Quebec, on May 8-10, 2006. The conference will bring together various partners the project has worked with over the years, as well as other leading experts from across Canada and around the world. Sharing policy research and experiences in freshwater management, this conference marks a major step in Canada’s freshwater policy evolution.

The format for the conference will be a series of simultaneous workshops on specific themes, each designed to answer a specific question, culminating in a plenary session where it will all be drawn together.

The workshop sessions will address key questions, including:

  • What has changed since the Pearse report of 1985?
  • How does climate change affect our policies?
  • What is the Federal role?
  • Is better inter-jurisdictional coordination needed?
  • How can we move towards Integrated Water Resources Management?
  • Each workshop will address these questions through specific themes, such as:

  • Valuing and allocating water resources;
  • Public-private partnerships for municipal drinking water
  • First Nations Drinking Water: Exploring Regulatory Options?
  • Managing small drinking and wastewater systems
  • The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and other boundary waters issues
  • Reviewing the 1987 Federal Water Policy
